For years, ENERGY STAR appliances have been a worthwhile investment for homeowners. Many Maryland residents have wanted to invest in new appliances that not only work better, but also run more efficiently. These unique appliances are designed to use less energy while delivering superior results, which allows homeowners to enjoy a more comfortable house and a lower utility bill.

However, these appliances can come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, the annual Shop Maryland Energy Weekend sales tax holiday provides Maryland residents with significant cost savings when purchasing qualifying ENERGY STAR appliances.

The Shop Maryland Energy Weekend sales tax holiday begins on Saturday, February 13, 2021 and runs through Monday, February 15, 2021. During this time period, shoppers can purchased qualifying ENERGY STAR appliances without paying the sales tax.

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot feels that this is an inviting opportunity for Maryland residents, and he encourages them to consider purchasing new appliances during this event. Some of the ENERGY STAR appliances that may qualify include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Washing machines
  • Dryers
  • Standard-sized refrigerators
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Boilers
  • Compact florescent and LED light bulbs
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Programmable thermostats

All appliances that qualify for this sales tax exemption must meet or exceed the ENERGY STAR efficiency requirements that are put in place by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

ENERGY STAR appliances are not only a worthwhile investment for your own quality of life, but they also can help increase the value of your property. In addition, there may be additional tax benefits for you to consider.
