On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2017 | Audits |

It is now February 1st, and all employers were required to mail or send out their W-2 forms by yesterday. If you haven’t received your W-2s yet, you shouldn’t panic. But you should be receiving them very soon. As these documents start coming in, taxpayers will soon come to grips with the fact that they need to get their taxes done.

Hanging over the tax proceedings is the fear that you may get audited by the Internal Revenue Service sometime in the future due to a error in your filing. However, it is important to remember that even with this fear hanging over your head, you still have rights as a taxpayer. The IRS isn’t unconstrained. There are rules and regulations that govern how the IRS handles an audit, if they were to audit you in the first place.

The most important thing to remember if you are audited is that you shouldn’t represent yourself during the proceedings. If you do so, you put yourself at risk of not upholding your rights simply because you may not have the experience to know them or apply them correctly. Having an attorney on your side during the audit is a crucial step in putting yourself in the best possible situation.
