Ira Mirsky is a tax advocate and advisor who counsels clients on tax planning and structuring regarding both current tax compliance and to avoid or minimize future tax problems. Mr. Mirsky focuses his practice on tax controversy and due diligence matters involving business planning and choice of entity; tax information reporting and withholding issues related to employer payroll, vendors/consultants, financial institutions, qualified retirement plans, and payments to nonresident alien individuals and foreign entities; administrative and compliance matters related to tax-qualified retirement plans; and IRS examination and Appeals cases involving settlement, collections, claims for refund, and the assessment of penalties and statutory interest in general.

Prior to joining Kunda & Associates, Mr. Mirsky served as a partner with an international law firm, and with national office roles in the Tax Controversy and Employee Benefits practices of two global accounting firms. Mr. Mirsky has more than 25 years of experience in serving as a trusted advisor to businesses, nonprofit organization, and individuals of varying size and sophistication on a wide range of tax controversy and compliance issues. This experience includes a wide range of practical operational and tax planning issues, as well as specific focus on virtually all aspects of managing the organization’s U.S. and global workforce (whether staffed by employees, independent contractors, or a third-party arrangement). As a trusted advisor, Mr. Mirsky has also worked with his clients to develop tax policies and procedures to enhance compliance.

Mr. Mirsky received an LLM in taxation from Georgetown University, with a specific concentration in corporate tax, IRS practice & procedure, and employee benefits. Mr. Mirsky received a Juris Doctor from the George Mason University School of Law, where his course work emphasized tax, organization and planning for business entities, and he received a certificate in Corporate and Securities Law. Mr. Mirsky double-majored in Accounting and Government & Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park, and served as one of three founding justices for the Governance Board of the University of Maryland Student Government Association.

Mr. Mirsky has been admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit and the U.S. Tax Court. His professional associations include the American Bar Association's Taxation Section, Bar Association of the District of Columbia, DC Bar Section of Taxation, Federal Bar Association.

Former Vice Chair of the Employment Tax Section, and former Developments Co-Chair of the Administrative Practice Committee for the American Bar Association. And former Private Sector Co-Chair, Employee Benefits of the Federal Bar Association Tax Section.

Mr. Mirsky has also served for more than 25 years in the roles of volunteer preparer, reviewer and site manager assisting low-income taxpayers in D.C., Maryland and Virginia through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. In some cases, the scope of this volunteer activity has included the representation of low-income clients before the IRS, state tax agencies, and/or before the U.S. Tax Court.
