Two reasons for choosing a tax attorney over a CPA

If you are facing tax problems, there are generally two types of professionals you can turn to for help: certified public accountants (CPAs) and tax attorneys. Although both professionals can potentially help with a given tax issue, if the issue involves a legal issue with the IRS or state taxing authority, it is generally better to choose a tax attorney over a CPA for two primary reasons.

Confidentiality

Simply put, tax attorneys offer their clients more confidentiality than CPAs. The reason for this is that only an attorney can offer attorney-client privilege. This privilege is important because it prevents the attorney from testifying against you if the case goes to trial. If you choose a CPA, on the other hand, he or she could potentially be compelled to reveal any compromising information about you he or she learned during the course of helping you with your tax issue, which may be used against you in your case.

Expertise in finding the best resolution

Tax laws are constantly changing. Although most CPAs are familiar with the basics of the tax settlement options that you may be able to utilize to reduce or eliminate your tax liability, only a tax attorney knows how to determine which option would be best for you and how to qualify you for it. Additionally, an attorney can let you know if the settlement option has any future or long-term negative legal consequences and work to minimize them.

Speak with an attorney

If you have tax problems, you potentially face jail time in addition to heavy financial penalties. To ensure the best possible outcome, contact the experienced tax attorneys at Kundra & Associates PC. Our attorneys will work along with with CPAs and other professionals to effectively resolve your tax issues and minimize any negative repercussions stemming from them.
