Dear Valued Clients:
I hope this email finds you all well.
By way of friendly reminder and continuing service to our customers, we would like to take a brief moment to point out this year's filing deadlines for federal and state taxes.
A. Federal Income Tax Filings
Taxpayers will have until Monday, April 18 to file their 2010 tax returns and pay any tax due because Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on Friday, April 15. By law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do; therefore, all taxpayers will have three extra days to file this year.
1. Maryland
The 2010 filing deadline for tax returns with a due date of April 15, 2011 has been extended to April 18, 2011.
2. District of Columbia
3. Virginia
Individual Income Tax Return -- May 1. (Because this falls on a Sunday, you must file by Monday, May 2, 2011): Forms 760, 760PY, 763 and 763-S, 765
B. Filing an Extension
Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Oct. 17 to file their 2010 federal tax returns. An extension gives you an additional six months to file your tax return. Please keep in mind that an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. All outstanding balances are due on April 18, 2011.
When you request an extension, you need to estimate your tax liability and pay any balance due by the April 18 deadline. If you are unable to pay the total balance due, you should pay as much as possible. Please contact us if indeed this is the case.
C. Overseas Residents
If you reside overseas, or are in the military on duty outside the U.S., you are allowed an automatic 2-month extension to file your return until June 15.
A. Qualification
An automatic 2-month extension to file your return and pay federal income tax is allowed if you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, and on the regular due date of your return:
- You are living outside the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of business or post of duty is outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or
- You are in military or naval service on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
B. Extension
If you are unable to file your return by the due date, you can request an additional extension to October 15 by filing Form 4868 before the return due date. Remember, any payments made after June 15 would be subject to both interest charges and failure to pay penalties.
1. To use this automatic 2-month extension, you must attach a statement to your return explaining which of the two situations listed earlier qualified you for the extension.
2. Automatic 6-month extension. If you are not able to file your return by the due date, you generally can get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file (but not of time to pay). To get this automatic extension, you must file a paper Form 4868 or use IRS e-file (electronic filing). The form must show your properly estimated tax liability based on the information available to you.
3. In addition to the 6-month extension, taxpayers who are out of the country can request a discretionary 2-month additional extension of time to file their returns. To request this extension, you must send the IRS a letter explaining the reasons why you need the additional 2 months.
Please feel free to contact our office if you believe that we can be of further service to you with regard to your tax issues: (301) 424-7585.
